“We have a place, all of us, in a long story – a story we continue, but whose end we will not see”
George W. Bush inaugural address, Washington 20th January 2000
“It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America”
Barack Obama victory speech, Chicago 5th November 2008
In many ways, despite George W. Bush stating that ‘we will not see’ the end of the ‘long story’, the victory of Barack Obama has brought about the beginning of the end of the final chapter: the final chapter of the Bush dynasty at least. It won’t be the end of the legacy though.
Whilst not wanting to wax lyrical or attempt to make some deep, meaningful comment, the victory of Obama does seem like one of those moments when you feel that history is being written at the same time that it is being lived and breathed. Change does feel like it has come.
Farewell Dubya, hello Obama.
